Felicity Reads!

Felicity has been developing her imagination a lot. She likes to read to herself and has decided that all that is really involved in reading is summarizing the pictures. With every book that she pulls off the shelf she exclaims, "This is a good one!" Hopefully you can hear this on the tape. We were trying to covertly tape this, as once she sees we have the camera she immediately wants to hold it rather than perform in front of it.

Rock On!

If Chris doesn't want to be a professor, he and Felicity could be in a band...

Happy Hanukkah (Day 5,6,7)

We have had a very successful Hanukkah. Felicity is excited about it, associates it with parties, food, and friends. Mission accomplished. Although I am still nervous about her getting too excited about Christmas--the lights, the trees, the fact that it is everywhere--I am resting assured that we did our duty to let her know that Hanukkah is very much a part of who she is :)

In the last few weeks Felicity has made quite a developmental turn. She is becoming more of a companion than a toddler that needs to be entertained. She likes to "help." And, as you can see in the video below, "helping" could be detrimental to some people's health...

Happy Hanukkah (Day 5)

Tonight's Hanukkah went in a slightly different order...

Since tomorrow is the Hanukkah brunch I had a lot of clearning, cooking, and organizing to do. So, Chris took Felicity to the public library so I could get something done. This wasn't as smooth as it ought to have been, as Felicity has this new fascination with blue Scotch-brite sponges and insists on carrying one with her at all times. For some children it's an Elmo doll, but for my child, it's a dish sponge.

I managed to get nearly everything done and was finishing the kitchen when they got home. Chris and Felicity were in the other room watching Bob the Builder (thank you, DVR) and suddenly I heard Chris exclaim, "When did Felicity get magnetic dress up dolls?" And before he had finished the sentence, both of us were staring at a slew of opened presents on the dining room floor. She had opened four. Noticing that we were investigating her previous activity, Felicity stated, "I open Hanukkah presents." She grinned ear to ear.

Oh well. She still did want to light the candles and proceeded to dance like a mad woman to the dreidel song, so I don't really think it's really just about the presents.

And, for the record, I just put the little present bandit to bed. And she was clutching her sponge.

Happy Hanukkah! (Day 3 and 4)

It's official. Felicity has caught on to Hanukkah.

Tonight after we went to the grocery store, she ran into the house, took her coat and boots off, and before I knew it she was standing on a kitchen chair putting candles in the menorah. Herself.

I asked her, "Felicity, do you want to light the candles."
"Yup," she replied, grabbing the matches.

I thought, "How sweet. She's really getting a sense of what this is all about. How great that she's embracing her Jewish identity at such a young age."

So we lit the candles.
We said the blessing.
We talked about how the candles were hot.
And again, she told ME not to touch them.

And then, faster than I have ever seen her move, she got down off the chair, ran into the dining room, and exclaimed, "I GET A PRESENT NOW!"

I guess she's not really embracing her Jewish identity, but I can at least rest assured that she understands the philosophical notion of necessary connection.

Happy Hanukkah (Day 2)

Last night for Hanukkah Felicity got a recorder. (Thanks, Nanny.) And she and her Daddy played a duet with her on the recorder and Chris on the harmonica. It was, well, it was creative.

And while Felicity didn't really get us anything for Hanukkah, she did say the sweetest thing. Unprompted.

Chris said, "I love you Felicity."

And she replied, "I love you my heart." ["I love you with all my heart."]

I could have burst into tears right then.

Happy Hanukkah! (Day 1)

Happy Hanukkah everyone!
This year is the first year that I think Felicity "gets" Hanukkah. She keeps saying "Happy Hanukkah" over and over and she even helped me light the menorah. She, of course, let me know that it was hot and reminded me not to touch it.
That's her thing lately, she has begun to parent us. In fact, this evening she gave Chris a round of applause for "going pee-pee on the potty."

Despite the fact that she has more than her fair share of eight presents, she is more interested in the styrofoam peanuts that Nanny packed her presents in.

In my effort to make Hanukkah exciting--(you have to understand the trials and tribulations that we Jewish kids go through when EVERYWHERE you look there's Christmas!)--we are having a Hanukkah party on Sunday morning. Felicity loves a good party, and we'll have a ton of kids here so she might begin to equate Hanukkah with fun.

Apart from those upcoming events we are just beginning to feel a true Midwest winter. It hasn't stopped snowing since 1 this afternoon and it's supposed to go until noon tomorrow. Should make for interesting driving in the morning...
